At a Joint Sitting of both houses of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa (i.e. the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces), the Chairperson of the National Planning Commission in his capacity as Minister in the Presidency responsible for the Commission – Minister Trevor Manuel, presented the revised National Development Plan to President Jacob Zuma. This follows an extensive process of consultation, visioning and assessment that culminated in the Commission’s Diagnostic Report in June 2011 and the development of the Draft National Development Plan released in November 2011. Further extensive consultations were held as part of a national dialogue and conversation on the Draft Plan. The modification and recommendations arising herefrom informed the revised plan presented to President Jacob Zuma today.
The Plan will now be discussed by Cabinet, where-after it will become official Government policy once it is adopted and will then have the standing of the country’s official national development plan. As such, it will represent the first plan of its kind for the type country South Africans desire for themselves and for future generations to inherit and how this is to be achieved through the combined and respective efforts of various societal role-players, including Government, business, workers and citizens.
